Crime and the Courts presented by the Canadian Association of Journalists, National Capital Chapter A half-day professional development seminar to help journalists find their way around the police blotter and the court docket. Close to 50 journalists turned out Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the National Press Clue to hear experts share their tips on how to report on courts and crime. Mr. Justice Colin McKinnon,Ontario Supreme Court; defence lawyer Lawrence Greenspon and Ottawa Police Staff Sergent Gerry Sabourin discussed the pressures and challenges they face when dealing with the media. Citizen reporters Ian MacLeod and Gary Dimmock, along with CJOH Assignment editor Paul Brent explained how they work to get the story and the details while still making deadline. Author Rick Mofina, a former Calgary Herald crime reporter, spoke about his experiences writing crime fiction. This event cost $30 for CAJ/NPC members, $40 for non-members and $20 for CAJ student members. A buffet lunch was included in the price.
