    INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM: RISKS AND REALITY

    Michel Auger has been a crime reporter for some 15 years with Le Journal de Montréal. An attempt on his life was made just one day after an investigative story by him on biker gangs was published. In recognition of his work, he has received the CJFE Tara Singh Hayer Award 2000 as well as an award from the International Association of French Journalists in Paris. Jan Wong of the Globe and Mail has said "there are limits on press freedom and we depend on journalists like Auger to push the limits".

    Bill Marsden, an investigative reporter and Assistant Editor for The Gazette, has carried out investigations into political corruption, organized crime and Canada’s underground economy over many years. Among his awards is the National Newspaper Award which he recieved, for the second time, this year.

    Andrew McIntosh is a senior writer and investigative reporter in The National Post's Parliamentary Bureau. A two time National Newspaper Award Winner, he earned the Investigative Story of the Year award from the Canadian Association of Journalists for his 1999 series of stories on irregularities in the awarding of job creation grants in the Prime Minister's St. Maurice riding.

    Bob Carty, chair, is a documentary producer for the CBC Radio programmes THIS MORNING and THE SUNDAY EDITION. He has received numerous awards for his documentary work including the 1998 Canadian Association of Journalists Award for Investigative Journalism.

    Cost: $7 for NPC/CAJ members, $20 for non-members, $5 for students

    included a hot breakfast

    Pay: payments were accepted at the door.
