RULES AND REGULATIONS

This section of the website is presented to provide a more complete description of the Soothsay Survey. In it you will find discussions of the Survey itself, the questions used in the Survey, definitions of the language used in the Survey, and, how the predictions are scored.

The Soothsay Survey is an attempt to measure the human potential for predicting the future (also known as precognition). There are two assumptions central to the Survey. The first assumption is that all humans have a latent potential for precognition. The second assumption is that most, if not all, humans are exposed to the same series of events from the mass media (i.e.- News, sports, television, radio, magazines, newspapers, and, the voices of our fellow humans). Given these two assumptions to be true, a variety of questions were selected for the Survey from the major areas of interest found in the media. People can make predictions on events, which they will experience with others in the future. The expectation is that given enough predictions from enough people, trends and patterns will appear which may help us to understand human precognition.

The merger of the Soothsay Survey and an Internet website is an attempt to gather predictions from the widest possible number of people. The website was designed to provide a place to make predictions on a wide range of topics and a place where you can compare your ability to predict the future with others. After you have made your predictions, e-mail them to us by selecting the ‘SUBMIT’ button at the bottom of the Survey. This constitutes one set of predictions for the purposes of scoring.

The predictions submitted are stored for a year (the year defined in the Survey Introduction). At the end of the year, the predictions are compared to the events which occurred during the year. A numerical value is assigned to accurate predictions, and. an overall score is assigned to each set of predictions submitted. Approximately a month later, the scores of all submissions for that Survey will be posted in the Archives area of this website. The individual who submits the predictions with the highest score for the Annual Survey (the Survey which collects predictions between November and January) is proclaimed the Soothsayer of the Year.

The Survey gathers predictions continuously. Every three months, a new version of the Survey is initiated. When a new version begins, changes will be made to some items (particularly the Bonus question). If you do not ‘Submit’ your predictions prior to the dates listed as ‘during the year’ for that version of the Survey, they will be added to the current version’s predictions. No matter when you submit your predictions, they will be evaluated.
