Star Trek: The Next Generation

Paris' Soul

by

Robert Roy

Act I

Scene 1

Enterprise external view, inside nebulous cloud.

[Picard]:"Enterprise log, Stardate 45921.3, our surveys of the Alpha Zeta star cluster have been cut short. We received a distress signal from a private vessel identified as the Petra Myers. The message was extremely distorted, but we were able to make out the gist of it. Their vessel was crippled by an ion storm and they were being blown off course and forced into the Wujani nebula. They have no means of avoiding the nebula cloud. We have entered the cloud, but its interference has seriously reduced sensor efficiency. We have begun the difficult task of a virtually manual search. Also, Counselor Troi has just recently returned from a seminar on Earth. With all that is going on, I have not yet had a chance to ask her about her trip."

Scene 2

On the Enterprise bridge, Picard, Riker and Troi are seated in their normal positions. Worf is at tactical, Ro at the helm and Data at ops. LaForge is manning the engineering station. They all watch the viewscreen. The image presented thereupon is a very distorted and barely visible view of the interior of the nebula.

[Picard]:"Any signs yet, Commander Data?"

[Data]:"No, sir. The sensors detect nothing so far."

[Picard]:"Mr. LaForge, is there nothing you can do to boost the sensors?"

[LaForge]:"I'm trying Captain, but the interference that the cloud is putting out is incredible. Radiation and particle readings are off the scale."

[Data]:"The Wujani nebula is commonly accepted to be the most disruptive of all such known effects, Captain."

[Picard]:"Thank you Mr. Data."

[Data]:"Not at all."

[Picard, to Ro]:"Ensign, adjust search pattern to take in a sweep factor of twenty four degrees per second."

[Ro]:"Aye, sir."

[Picard]:"Data, do you have any information on the Petra Myers?"

[Data]:"It is a merchant ship, named after its owner. Its principal ports of call are in the Deneb and Rigelian systems."

[Riker]:"They're a bit far out, aren't they?"

[Data]:"Apparently so, Commander, presumably the result of the ion storm."

[Picard]:"What is that?"

[Data]:"I said, that they must have been blown off course by the ion storm."

Picard stands up and begins walking towards the viewscreen. He stands between the forward stations.

[Picard]:"No, no, I mean, what is that?"

Picard points at an area of the viewscreen.

[Riker]:"Mr. Worf, magnify that area."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

The viewscreen now displays an enlarged image of the area in question. It is even more distorted and blurry. Something is barely visible through the interference.

[Data]:"It could be a ship, Captain."

[Picard]:"Ensign Ro, bring us closer, to within one thousand kilometres."

[Ro]:"Aye, sir."

The Enterprise begins to move forward towards the object. Slowly the object begins to enlarge.

[Ro]:"One thousand kilometres, Captain."

[Picard]:"Full stop."

[Ro]:"Aye, sir, reading full stop."

[Picard]:"Mr. Worf, can you give me more magnification?"

[Worf]:"Aye, sir. Increasing magnification."

Again the object is enlarged on the screen, but the interference prevents it from being seen except in brief flashes. Suddenly, the screen becomes clear for about three seconds, making the vessel quite visible. The vessel is fairly large, about the same size as an Excelsior class ship. The design seems more streamlined than the normal cargo ships. The screen eventually reverts to the usual static.

[Picard]:"Open a channel, Lieutenant."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir. They're not responding, Captain."

[Picard]:"Is it because of interference from the nebula?"

[Worf]:"Unknown, sir."

[Data]:"Captain, sensors are indicating an energy build up from the vessel."

Picard leans over to look at the readings.

[Picard, excited, to Ro]:"Evasive action! Now!"

Before Ro can even react, beams of energy flare out from the other vessel, aimed at the Enterprise's stardrive section. The whole ship is rocked savagely. Picard, who was not well braced, falls sideways and his head solidly collides with the ops panel. Riker is immediately on his feet, heading towards Picard.

[Riker, to Ro]:"Get us out of here. Worf, return fire."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

Worf keys in the manual firing sequence. The main ventral array fires a beam that connects directly amidships with their opponent. The other ship does not fire again.

[Riker]:"Bridge to sickbay, medical emergency."

Riker stays kneeling next to Picard. He does not disturb him.

[LaForge]:"Commander, you'd better see this."

Riker turns towards the engineer. Troi immediately moves to stand comfortingly near the captain. Riker strides up to the engineering station.

[Riker]:"What is it?"

[LaForge]:"The matter-antimatter containment field is collapsing."

[Riker]:"Can you stabilize it?"

[LaForge]:"No, Commander. I can slow the breach, but there's nothing I can do to stop it."

[Riker]:"How long do we have?"

[LaForge]:"Five minutes, maybe less."

[Riker]:"We'll need every second of those five minutes."

Riker begins walking back down to the centre of the bridge. He taps his communicator.

[Riker]:"All hands, this is Commander Riker. Prepare for emergency saucer separation. Abandon stardrive section, I repeat, all hands, abandon stardrive section."

Act II

Scene 1

Top view, from within the nebula, showing the saucer about to exit the nebula and the stardrive section sitting next to the other vessel.

[Riker]:"Enterprise log, supplemental, Commander William T. Riker recording. The rescue of the Petra Myers has turned out to be a trap. Knowing our shields would not function in the nebula, they lured us into close range before attacking. Their assault was a telling one, for we have been forced to abandon the stardrive section. We believe we were able to evacuate all hands to the saucer section before separation. The other ship was also damaged in our return assault and has been disabled. They would not or could not answer our hails, so they have also been left behind. Captain Picard's head injury was not severe, but the doctor is keeping him for observation."

Scene 2

On the Enterprise bridge, Riker stands in the middle of the bridge, watching the viewscreen which displays the exterior surface of the nebula. Worf, Data and Ro occupy their normal positions. The ship is on emergency lighting.

[Data]:"Commander, we have left the nebula effect."

[Riker, to Ro]:"Set course for starbase one ninety nine. Mr. Worf send out a distress call to any ships in the vicinity. Also advise starbase of our status."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

[Ro]:"Course plotted, Commander."

[Riker]:"Actuate."

[Ro]:"Aye, sir."

On the viewscreen, the nebula flares with light, presumably from the destruction of the stardrive section. Riker taps his communicator.

[Riker]:"Riker to LaForge."

[LaForge]:"LaForge here."

[Riker]:"How long can we sustain impulse power? Will we get to starbase one ninety nine?"

[LaForge]:"Yes, Commander, if we conserve other energies, but not much farther. Without the stardrive's Bussard collectors, we won't be able to replenish our antimatter stores until we get there."

[Riker]:"Understood. Riker out. Mr. Data, you have the bridge. I'm going down to sickbay."

[Data]:"Aye, Commander."

Riker makes his way to the turbolift as Data takes the captain's chair. Another officer replaces him at ops.

Scene 3

Riker walks along the corridor towards sickbay. As he gets near, he can see the number of people that are in the corridors getting treatment. He has to pick his way through what looks like a triage before getting into sickbay itself. The sickbay is filled to capacity. He locates Picard over in a corner.

[Picard]:"What is the situation, Number One?"

[Riker]:"We're clear of the nebula and headed towards starbase. Geordi says we should have enough energy to make it."

[Picard]:"And the stardrive section?"

[Riker]:"Gone. As far as I can tell, we got it completely evacuated in time. Whoever laid this trap, did it well."

[Picard]:"Agreed. They knew not only when we were vulnerable, but also where. The question is, who were they."

[Riker]:"We didn't exactly get a good look at them, but I'd say their level of technology is just about comparable to ours. The closest power of that magnitude would be the Arcadian Star Empire."

[Picard]:"The Arcadians? They're not aligned with the Federation, but there has never been any hostilities before. I can't believe they'd wish to start something now, and certainly not this way. Besides, their ships are usually quite recognizable because of their star shape. The ship that attacked us certainly doesn't match that description."

[Riker]:"Nor did it match anything I've ever seen before. It could be that a new power is emerging in the area."

[Picard]:"That's another possibility."

Picard takes a quick look around the sickbay. He then jumps to his feet and begins moving towards the door.

[Riker]:"Are you sure you should be leaving, Captain? Doctor Crusher said she wanted to keep you for observation."

[Picard]:"Well, she's not here observing, so I'd say that means I can leave."

Picard gets to the door just as he is finishing his sentence and when it opens, Crusher is just coming in. He tries to scoot past her, but she blocks his exit.

[Crusher]:"And where do you think you're going, Captain?"

[Picard]:"To the bridge, Doctor."

[Crusher]:"No you don't, you get right back over there, where you belong. Captain, you've received a head injury. That's nothing to take lightly."

[Picard]:"And neither is an attack on my ship. Now if you'll excuse me."

[Crusher]:"I will do nothing of the sort. Commander Riker is perfectly capable of handling the ship until you're better."

[Picard]:"But I'm fine Doctor."

[Crusher]:"You may think you're fine, but there's no reason to take any chances. Now if you don't get back in bed, I'll have to have Mr. Worf come down here and confine you in it."

[Picard]:"Doctor, with all the real injuries you have to deal with..."

[Crusher, interrupting]:"I don't need the hassle of chasing you back into bed every five minutes, so just get back in bed and stay there until I say you can go."

Riker moves around the captain and the doctor.

[Riker]:"Don't worry, Captain. I'll keep you informed."

Riker starts walking away from the sickbay. Picard half-heartedly tries to grab him and stop his departure, but he misses. Crusher then ushers him back to his bed.

Scene 4

Commander Riker enters the bridge. The same people that were there when he left are still on duty and Troi is now present, and sits in her usual position. Riker takes the command chair and Data retakes ops.

[Riker]:"Counselor, how's the crew reacting?"

[Troi]:"As can be expected, Commander, with a certain amount of apprehension. A single smaller ship nearly destroy the entire ship, and succeeded in destroying half of it. That idea is a very sobering one. There is also some sadness because of losing the stardrive section. It's half of the Enterprise, and so you have to expect some kind of emotional attachment."

Data swings about in his chair to face them.

[Data]:"Counselor, may I ask a question?"

[Troi]:"Sure, go ahead Data."

[Data]:"I still do not understand how one can have such an attachment to a ship. An attachment to the crew of the ship seems reasonable, but is not one ship essentially the same as another, or at least the same as one of the same class."

[Riker]:"It's not that simple, Data. People attach memories to the places they experience them as well as with whom they experience them. We all have some very vivid memories of things that have happened on this ship, both happy and sad. The ship will always be a reminder of those memories and the memories remind us of the ship. If you take the place out of the memory, you take out part of its essence."

[Data]:"But, Commander, beyond the name that is painted on the outside, how can you really discern one ship from another?"

[Troi]:"In your heart, you know the difference."

[Data]:"Then it is unlikely I shall be able to understand, for a heart is one thing that I do not have."

Troi looks at Riker, to see if he has a response, but he doesn't seem to.

[Ro]:"Commander, how do you tell the difference between friends and acquaintances?"

[Data]:"The more experiences I share with individuals, the more established the neutral paths become in my brain. Friendship for me is more familiarity than anything else."

[Ro]:"Well then I'd assume that you'd be very familiar with the Enterprise, and less so with another ship. It seems the same thing to me."

[Data]:"But the question, Ensign, is 'Is it the same thing to me?'"

Ro shrugs her shoulders and returns her attention to the helm.

[Worf]:"Commander, I'm getting strange sensor readings. It's almost like a ship uncloaking, right in front of us."

[Riker]:"On screen."

The view screen shows what appears to be a ship of huge size, fading into visibility. The ship is two to three times longer than the Enterprise, but thinner. Its appearance is not entirely unlike a dragon in flight, but is more mechanical looking. It sits directly in the path of the Enterprise.

[Riker]:"Ensign, full stop."

[Ro]:"Full stop, aye."

[Riker]:"Mr. Worf, do you have any idea what kind of ship that is?"

[Worf]:"No, Commander."

[Riker]:"Mr. Data, scan the database and see if you can find a match."

[Data]:"Yes, Commander."

[Riker]:"Worf, hail them."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir, hailing. Hailing frequencies open. They're transmitting visually."

[Riker]:"Put it onscreen."

Standing in the middle of the bridge of the opposing ship is a very imposing human male in about his mid-forties. He has shoulder length, flame red hair and disturbingly bright eyes. He is dressed in what appears to be some kind of white armour and wears a sword at his waist. He stands about six and a half feet tall. Some of the others on the bridge are humans and others appear generally humanoid, except they have pronounced bones just about eyebrow level (Ala Aardra from Devil's Due).

[Riker]:"This is Commander William T. Riker of the U.S.S. Enterprise..."

Riker notices that he does not have the other man's full attention. He seems to be looking at something else on the Enterprise's bridge and is quite surprised to see whatever it is. Following his gaze, Riker notices that Troi is staring gap-mouthed at him.

[Hjrad]:"It cannot be you! Of course it isn't, that was twenty five years ago, a generation. My dear, you don't know how much you look like your mother Deanna."

Riker looks back at Hjrad and then again at Troi, attempting to figure out how this person knows who Deanna is. He is about to return to his question when Hjrad adopts a more formal posture.

[Hjrad]:"Commander Riker, this is Lord General Hjrad, leader of the combined forces of Solinae and Sycaras, and you are now my prisoners. Commander, your ship is in no condition to defend itself from us. You may surrender or be destroyed. I give you ten minutes to decide."

Hjrad's image disappears from the screen and is replaced by his ship. The Enterprise personnel seem rather shocked by Hjrad's statement. Riker looks at Troi.

[Riker]:"It seems we now know our enemy. It now remains to find out how well."

Act III

Scene 1

The Enterprise officers are seated around the conference room table. Crusher seems to be regarding Picard, as though waiting for some ailment to overtake him. The focus of the rest of the group seems to be Troi.

[Riker, to Picard]:"He calls himself Lord General Hjrad of Solinae and Sycaras."

[Picard]:"Commander Data, is there anything known about this Hjrad?"

[Data]:"Very little is known about him personally, except that he is indeed the military dictator of the planets Solinae and Sycaras. These are the twelfth and fourth planets, respectively, in the Tasman system. The Federation had offered membership approximately a decade ago, but were flatly refused. It was Captain Pearson of the Champlain that had been sent to make the offer. According to his reports, it was Hjrad that led both planets at that time. Not much else is known."

[Riker, to Troi]:"But he knew your mother, Deanna, and apparently your name. He nearly mistook you for her."

[Picard]:"That seems unlikely. Counselor, how would this man have known your mother?"

[Troi]:"He has never met my mother, Captain."

[Riker]:"But he said..."

[Troi]:"He was understandably confused, Commander, and you misunderstood his meaning. He doesn't think he knew my mother Lwaxana, he thinks he knew my mother Deanna."

[Riker]:"I don't get it."

[Picard]:"Are you saying that he doesn't think you are you, but your daughter?"

[Troi]:"Exactly."

[Riker]:"But you don't have a daughter."

[Troi]:"No, I don't."

[Picard]:"But he thinks you do, because..."

[Troi]:"Because otherwise how could I look the same age twenty five years after our last encounter."

[Picard]:"So you have met him before."

[Troi]:"Yes."

[Picard]:"Twenty five years ago."

[Troi]:"I guess."

[Picard]:"But you were the same age you are now."

[Troi]:"Uh-huh."

[Picard]:"I see."

Riker looks at Picard incredulously and then realizes that Picard meant that in the non-understanding sense.

[Riker]:"Maybe you do Captain, but I can't say for the rest of you, but I'm still a bit hazy."

[LaForge]:"Perhaps if Guinan were here."

[Data, to Troi]:"If you could give us a more detailed explanation, perhaps it would assist us in our ability to comprehend this."

[Troi]:"It's quite a long story."

[Riker]:"Then let's have the short version, we only have about five minutes left on Hjrad's deadline."

[Data]:"Five minutes, ten point three seconds."

[Riker]:"Thank you Mr. Data."

Data was about to respond to this, but then recognized the sarcasm and diverts his attention to Troi.

[Troi]:"You remember that I was going to Earth for a seminar. Because the seminar was being held at the Academy, I sent a message ahead for Wes to meet me when I arrived, which he did. We also met someone there we hadn't expected, Q."

[Picard]:"Q?"

[Riker]:"What would Q be doing on Earth?"

[Troi]:"He said he was there to study Wes, something to do with the Traveller from Tau Alpha C. Wes flatly refused. They argued about how Q was always interfering in our lives and the discussion came around to the Borg. Wes tried to convince him that he should learn from the past. That was his mistake."

[LaForge]:"Uh oh, what'd he do?"

[Troi]:"Before we could stop him, he'd sent us back in time, to the capitol of Solinae. It's only now that I've found out how long into the past it was."

[Riker]:"But why did Q send you there and then?"

[Troi]:"Why does Q do anything? He was trying to prove something, but I don't think we ever did find out."

[Riker]:"Didn't he badger you with it constantly?"

[Troi]:"No, actually, he was uncharacteristically absent. After he'd sent us there, we never saw him again."

[Picard]:"So what happened?"

[Troi]:"Q set us up identities there, so we played along as much as we could. We met Hjrad, he was just the captain of the guard then, and at first we thought he was a friend. But in the end, he almost killed Wes, and me too, for that matter. We got out of there just in time."

[Data]:"The facts would indicate that Hjrad has changed his station since that time."

[LaForge]:"That's an understatement."

[Riker]:"Do you think he'll go through with his threat?"

[Troi]:"No question. If he's anything like he was, I have no doubt that he'd destroy us if he thinks he has to."

[Crusher]:"Why didn't you tell us about this, Deanna, or at least tell me? He's my son."

[Troi]:"I haven't really had a chance to discuss anything, yet."

Crusher doesn't seem particularly satisfied with this reason, but reserves her comments for later.

[Picard]:"Counselor, is there any way you think you could use your relationship with this man to an advantage?"

[Troi]:"I'm not sure, Captain. He's very strong willed and not what I'd consider a forgiving man. I don't think revealing my true identity to him would be helpful. It could very well be that he's out here looking for me, and Wes. When he first noticed me on the bridge, I felt the most incredible rage. My past relationship with him is more likely to be a hindrance."

[Riker]:"What if he still thought you were your daughter? He seemed most unsettled when he saw you. Perhaps you can keep him off balance."

[Troi]:"I'm not sure. Actually, he did seem almost pleased once he decided I must be my daughter."

[Picard]:"Likely he thinks he may have found a new revenge against you. Number One, let's see if we can't see about shoring up our defenses. Meeting adjourned."

[Riker]:"But Captain, what about Hjrad?"

[Picard]:"You worry about the ship, Number One, I'll see to the Lord General."

[Riker]:"Aye, Captain."

Riker does not seem thrilled with this, but he keeps his peace. The officers begin filling out of the conference room.

[Picard]:"Counselor, could you remain here a moment, and you too Doctor."

Crusher and Troi return to the table.

[Picard]:"Counselor, you were rather sparse with the details in your story."

[Troi]:"Well, there wasn't really that much to tell."

[Picard]:"Deanna, I don't have to be empathic to know that you are holding back. You somehow developed enough enmity with this man that the mere sight of you sends him into a rage and you expect me to believe that nothing much happened?"

[Troi]:"Captain, it may be hard to believe, but it's true."

[Picard]:"Then you'd better explain it in detail, because we'd better find out what makes him tick, and we may only have about three minutes."

[Troi]:"Well, when we arrived, we were apparently trespassing where Q had placed us. That's where we met Hjrad. He arrested us and brought us to see the Dominus, the planet's leader."

[Crusher]:"They brought you before the planet's leader because you were trespassing?"

[Troi]:"They had some distinction between new and old laws and the old ones required judgement by the Dominus. Anyway, we were given just a reprimand and escorted to our home. As I said, Q had created entire identities for us, including living arrangements. We were able to use the computer in the apartment to determine the details about ourselves and the culture from it. Later that night, Hjrad came by. He seemed friendly enough and we talked to him. He was having trouble with his sort of girlfriend who happened to be the Dominar, daughter of the leader. He also seemed very interested in our marital status."

Crusher seems surprised at the idea that marriage was in any way involved.

[Crusher]:"Marital status?"

[Troi]:"Part of our identity was that we lived together. Part of Q's warped view of things, I guess. We also spoke of honour. His family was part of their society's warrior caste until the castes were abolished. He still held onto his old warrior ways. That was a source of conflict between him the ruling family. Anyway eventually, he came to us again, this time with a proposition. The Dominar was pressing him for a commitment which he refused to give, but being as powerful as she was, he was placed under a lot of stress. He placed his entire honour on the line and asked Wes for the right to court me."

[Crusher]:"Wait a minute, why would he ask Wes?"

[Troi]:"In their society, if someone is already involved, you just don't try to break that up. Even asking like he did was a great dishonour upon Hjrad, but at least it's permitted."

[Picard]:"But why court you, I mean besides the obvious?"

[Troi]:"If he were married to me, it would be too late for the Dominar to do anything about it. He said that it would only be in name only and that the position Wes and I were in made this a unique opportunity for him to make this offer. Wes and I discussed it and decided that the safest approach was for Wes to turn him down. Hjrad wasn't exactly satisfied with that, so he set about to change our minds. As captain of the guard, he also had a certain amount of influence. When we'd had enough of his pressure tactics, we went to see the Dominar thinking if she took the pressure off Hjrad, he'd leave us alone. She simply refused, but pointed out that this proposition may have had less to do with her than it did with me."

[Picard]:"You mean that he was indeed enamoured of you."

[Troi]:"Precisely. We didn't know how long we'd be staying there, since Q had yet to make any kind of appearance, and quite obviously Hjrad had no intentions of giving up this notion. So, Wes suggested we apply the same reasoning he planned to use."

[Crusher]:"I'm afraid I don't follow."

[Picard]:"He wanted to marry you to avoid the Dominar, so if you married Wes, he'd have to leave you alone."

[Crusher]:"Marry Wes?"

[Troi]:"It seemed like the only way. It wouldn't have meant anything between us the way it would have meant something to Hjrad."

[Picard]:"And did you?"

[Troi]:"Almost. Unfortunately Hjrad showed up at the end of the ceremony. He stunned Wes with what they call a blaster and then tried to force me to marry him. I resisted and he almost killed me. Wes intervened and knocked me away from his assault. Hjrad then was poised to kill us both when we disappeared from there and returned to Wes' quarters at the Academy."

[Picard]:"So you think that this great hatred he has towards you is because you rejected him."

[Troi]:"I guess so. I really don't understand him at all."

[Picard]:"It's a shame your mother didn't name you Helen."

Crusher almost smiles at the Captain's joke, but Troi, doesn't seem to get it.

[Picard]:"From Greek mythology, Paris, the son of Priam of Troy, kidnapped the most beautiful woman of the time, Helen, who was the wife of Menelaus, a Grecian king. What ensued was called the Trojan war as Menelaus attempted to recapture his bridge, and Helen was later referred to as Helen of Troy. It doesn't take much to fit this to our current scenario."

[Crusher]:"But, Captain, in this case Helen didn't go with Paris, or rather she escaped with Menelaus, and so Paris is now waging the war over her."

Troi seems about to interject something when Picard's communicator sounds.

[Riker]:"Captain, we are being hailed by Hjrad."

[Picard]:"On my way, Number One. It seems we have run out of time."

The three officers leave the conference room.

Scene 2

Picard, Troi and Crusher enter the bridge area. They take their normal bridge positions.

[Picard]:"Put Hjrad onscreen, Worf."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

Hjrad's image returns to the screen.

[Picard]:"Lord General Hjrad, I am Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the Enterprise. I would like to know by what right you have for taking prisoners."

[Hjrad]:"It is quite simple, Captain, I have taken you prisoner because I am capable of doing it."

[Picard]:"This is an act of war, Lord General."

[Hjrad]:"Precisely, Captain, that is most certainly what this is. Your ten minutes have elapsed. You may surrender and live or fight and die, either choice is fine by me."

[Troi]:"Lord General."

Hjrad's attention shifts from Picard to Troi.

[Hjrad]:"You have something to say to me?"

[Troi]:"Yes. Can we not talk about this peacefully?"

Hjrad appears to be considering this.

[Hjrad]:"Alright, I will speak with you, if you will transport yourself to this vessel. You may bring one other with you, if you wish."

[Picard]:"Counselor, no, I cannot allow you to do this."

[Hjrad]:"Captain Picard, I have given my word. No harm will come to those you send aboard this vessel and neither will I initiate combat with you until their safe return. Your only other options have already been stated."

[Troi]:"Captain, it's alright, I want to go. I want to face my father's rival. I'll be fine. Hjrad, I will prepare to beam aboard your ship."

[Hjrad]:"It will be a pleasure to receive you."

[Picard]:"If I cannot talk you out of it, then I'll accompany you, Helen."

Those that weren't concerned by Troi's reference to her father were definitely confused by Picard's calling her Helen, with obvious exceptions.

[Hjrad]:"I shall prepare for your arrivals. Co-ordinates will be sent to you."

The transmission ends and the view of the ship returns.

[Riker]:"Captain, I must protest, you are far to valuable to risk on this mission which is ill-advised in the first place."

[Picard]:"It is too late, Number One. I have already sent my RSVP."

Act IV

Scene 1

Picard and Troi appear on the transporter platform of the Sycaran vessel. Two Sycaran males are present. One is the operator and the other stands in front of the platform to greet them. He is dressed in rather flamboyant garb. He bows low in greeting. At his waist is a rapier.

[Kayne]:"Welcome aboard, Captain Picard, Counselor, I believe it is. The Lord General's description was not an exaggeration, as I had expected, for I find myself astonished by the similarity. I am known as Kayne, and I place myself at your service."

[Picard]:"Thank you, Kayne. This is Counselor Helen Crusher."

[Troi]:"Hello, Kayne. You spoke of my similarity to my mother. She never mentioned anyone named Kayne, had you met her?"

[Kayne]:"Alas, no, my dear, but many's the image of her, I have seen. Your mother's brief sojourn on Solinae had effects of a most dramatic proportion, I would say. You are descended of a modern legend on that world."

Kayne escorts Picard and Troi from the transporter room to the corridor. The general nature of the ship is that in is darkly lit and cleanly uncluttered. It is not designed for comfort the way Federation ships are, but it is not uncomfortable either. As they walk the corridors, Troi garners many looks from passing crewpersons, particularly the Human ones.

[Kayne, to Troi]:"I would say that it is probably not unlike the feeling you would experience if your deity were to suddenly be walking among you, or so to speak. Though mistake me not, that is not the way they see you, in fact. Still, the accuracy of my analogy is not thusly diminished."

The group rounds a corner and enter a room. The chamber is a dining hall with a large table that runs down the middle of the room. Seated at its head is Hjrad. Kayne stops at the opposing end and waits for a signal from Hjrad. The other two stop behind him.

[Kayne]:"Lord General, may I present Captain Picard and Counselor Helen Crusher?"

Hjrad gestures them forward and they comply. When they get to the other end of the table, Kayne offers them chairs. Kayne then steps back and draws his rapier. Picard looks as if he is about to try to defend himself when Troi puts a restraining hand on his arm. Kayne moves to stand facing Hjrad and holds his rapier, point down, with the pommel over his heart.

[Kayne]:"Lord General, I ask you for your leave."

[Hjrad]:"Granted, your Majesty."

Kayne turns on his heel and departs, replacing his rapier to his scabbard as he does. Picard seems surprised.

[Picard]:"His majesty? Is he a king?"

[Hjrad]:"Yes, King Kayne Bloodblade of the Silverealms, the largest country on Sycaras. The Bloodblades have quite the family line. Except for a brief period, they have been the ruling family of his country for almost a thousand years."

[Picard]:"I wouldn't have taken him for royalty, a servant perhaps."

[Hjrad]:"He isn't a servant, he is a simple soldier, no more, no less, as are they all."

[Picard]:"Indeed. But not yourself."

[Hjrad]:"No. I am a warrior. But I am the last of my breed."

[Troi]:"The last? What happened to the others?"

[Hjrad]:"They are crushed. It was most unfortunate, I regret it greatly."

[Troi]:"You regret it? Who crushed them?"

[Hjrad]:"I did. Still, it was not my fault. The fools chose to defend the Dominion, a fatal mistake. Now both have been swept away."

[Troi]:"Lord General, from my mother's description, much must have happened in the last twenty five years. May I ask how you've progressed so far in that little time?"

[Hjrad]:"Do you wish to speak of peace or do you wish a lesson in history? Also, my dear, I would be honoured if you would call me Hjrad."

Troi nods her head in assent.

[Picard]:"Often, Lord General, peace comes through understanding. Perhaps if we knew the steps of the path that led you to this point, we would be better able to understand your point of view."

[Hjrad]:"Very well. After your parents' visit to my world, others of their kind came, from beyond the skies. They came in a space vessel and from a long way away. They would simply appear on our planet, much the way Wes and Deanna did. I knew then that they had led these strangers to us. They became a threat to my way of life."

[Picard]:"These strangers, were they Humans, like yourselves?"

[Hjrad]:"No, they were different, or so it was said. I myself never saw them, but I knew they were there. They came to many people and they made great offers to them. Many of the most prominent citizens became corrupted by these outsiders. I brought this to the attention of the Dominus, but I soon learned he too had fallen prey to their influence. Until then, I had had the Dominus' ear, but soon I found my power was being curtailed. It became intolerable."

[Troi]:"So what did you do?"

[Hjrad]:"I left. The scientists had completed the Veagtok project, thanks greatly to your father. After he'd given them the key, the rest fell in line quickly. So when the first ship was built, I took what remained of my faithful followers and stole it."

[Troi]:"And you went to Sycaras?"

[Hjrad]:"It was a short journey, indeed only a few minutes with the impulse drive. We landed the ship in an area called the Aellflaiens. It was there that I'd met Kayne. At the time, his family had been deposed from their throne. I agreed to help him regain it. It was no great task. The Sycarans have great minds for technology, but tactics elude them. You see, they are very bright, but unfocused. Still, they are capable of being led. They make very good soldiers, as long as there is someone there to guide them. Soon Kayne was back on his throne and the real war began."

[Picard]:"The real war?"

[Hjrad]:"Yes. I had control of the Aellflaiens and the Silverealms, but that was just one two populated continents. Besides the country that used to control the Silverealms was more than a little bit upset. So next came the World War. It was glorious, but after ten years, it had come to an end. Once the planet was united, or well at least over-ruled by me, we set about the task of preparing my return to Solinae. As I had said, the Sycarans have heads for technology. United and with a purpose, it took only a few years to advance ourselves to nearly the same level as the intruders. We built many ships and we took our small fleet to Solinae. They were not prepared and soon their influence was removed from my world."

[Picard]:"That sounds all too simple."

[Hjrad]:"It is said that their homeworld is vastly distant. I assume that they could not spare more than a single ship. The price of defending their claim to my world suddenly became to costly for them."

[Picard]:"I also wonder if you able to take control of Sycaras so quickly, why these intruders didn't do the same, since you say they had such technology."

[Hjrad]:"No, Picard, they had the ability to create technology, but as I said, not the drive. They were also not overly rich in many natural resources, except silver, which they had in abundance. In fact, almost the entire capital city was built of the stuff. Anyway, so where was I?"

[Troi]:"You had repelled the intruders."

[Hjrad, distastefully]:"Yes, well, unfortunately what was left behind after their departure was a corrupt and hideous caricature of what the Dominion had once been. It had to be swept away."

[Troi]:"But the warriors did not agree."

[Hjrad]:"I could hardly blame them. Their families had striven long and hard to forge the Dominion, and even though it had forsaken them, they were unwilling to forsake it."

[Picard]:"But you could."

[Hjrad]:"I knew it was time. There were preparations to be made and their stubbornness would have just delayed them."

[Picard]:"Preparations for war."

[Hjrad]:"The waters will wash away the words carved in stone as well as those drawn in the sand. If it was their time, so be it."

[Picard]:"But why do you go to war against us?"

[Hjrad]:"There is an insatiable beast that strikes at my heart and drinks my blood, Picard. Even at great distances, I can feel it rend my soul. Surely you can see that such a beast must be slain, in spite of the cost in lives of that undertaking."

Picard shows signs of confusion, and rightly so, at that comment. After a moment Troi seems to sort out his riddle.

[Troi]:"It's your honour, isn't it?"

Hjrad nods.

[Troi]:"It has been twenty five years. How long are you going to hold a grudge for something that was mostly your fault, anyway?"

[Hjrad, angered]:"My fault? I laid my honour at his feet and your father as much as wiped his feet on it, trampling it as though it had no meaning. The blow he struck me still bleeds, but that blood fires me."

Hjrad pulls his blade from its scabbard in one fluid motion and then brings it up so that he can examine the edges. Picard and Troi are both startled by these actions. Hjrad almost seems to be talking to the sword for a moment.

[Hjrad]:"My blood starves for his blood, and one day soon, that hunger will be satisfied."

Hjrad returns the sword to the scabbard and his attention to his guests.

[Hjrad, to Troi]:"I apologize if this offends you, Helen. I do not mean to. I must admit I have a certain respect for your father."

[Troi]:"But you're planning to kill him?"

[Hjrad]:"I must, if I am to be whole again. As long as your father lives, he is a constant reminder to me that part of my life is lost. With his death, my honour, my life, is restored to me."

[Picard]:"Lord General, I do not understand how you could have your idea of honour become so important to you that it outweighs your sense of right and wrong. You are speaking about a murder, after all."

[Hjrad]:"Certainly not, Captain. I do not propose to simply bury my sword in Wes while he sleeps. He will be given the opportunity to defend himself. If he is incapable, I cannot be held accountable."

[Picard]:"How easily you rationalize it, Lord General. Just simply force a sword in his hand and then you are perfectly justified in taking his life."

[Hjrad]:"Picard, I can see that you are a man of limited passion. It is quite clear that you cannot conceive of the fires that burn in other's hearts. My blood boils, Picard. I also know that Wes is the same. There was no mistaking the flames in his heart. Wes, now he understands honour. And I know for his love of Deanna he must understand mine for her as well."

The doors to the chamber open and Kayne re-enters. He stands by the doorway and waits for Hjrad to cross over to him. They whisper together. Picard moves closer to Troi.

[Picard]:"Is he talking about the same Wesley Crusher that I know?"

[Troi]:"Sort of. He's talking about Wesley as he knows him. I suppose it's just a question of circumstances."

Hjrad and Kayne finish speaking. Kayne moves to stand next to the door and Hjrad returns to where Picard and Troi are.

[Hjrad]:"I regret that I must leave you for awhile. Kayne will show you where you can wait and see to your needs."

Hjrad turns on his heel and marches out of the room. Kayne moves away from the doorway and towards Picard and Troi. He gives a gesture to indicate that they are to follow him.

Scene 2

On the Enterprise bridge, Riker sits in the command chair. Worf looks up from his console to address him.

[Worf]:"Commander, long range sensors report a ship approaching at high warp."

[Riker]:"Can you identify it, Lieutenant?"

[Worf]:"Aye, sir, just coming into range now. It's a Federation ship, registry N.C.C. two five zero six. Sir, it's the Foudroyant."

Riker stands and turns around to look at Worf. He seems pleasantly surprised.

[Riker]:"Galaxy class?"

[Worf]:"Aye, sir. They're in visual range now."

[Riker]:"Lieutenant, put them onscreen and open hailing frequencies."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

The viewscreen changes from a view of the Sycaran ship and now displays a ship very similar to the Enterprise. As Worf types in the sequence to open the frequencies, the console emits the sound that indicates it is not working.

[Worf]:"Sir, subspace communication is being jammed. The Sycaran ship has engaged its cloaking device."

On the screen, it can be seen that the Foudroyant has slowed.

[Worf]:"The Foudroyant has raised its shields and is arming weapon systems, Commander."

[Riker]:"Lieutenant, I want you to see if you can pierce the subspace interference. We need to let them know Captain Picard and Counselor Troi are aboard that ship. Data, who is the current Captain of the Foudroyant?"

Data inclines his head the way he does when processing information for a moment and then turns towards Riker.

[Data]:"Captain DaGama, sir."

[Riker]:"Lisa DaGama? She was in my class at the Academy. I remember she really had a knack for tactics."

[Worf]:"Commander, the Foudroyant is firing."

The dorsal array of the Foudroyant fires at a sixty degrees to the starboard side, the ventral array fires sixty degrees to port and the battle section ventral phasers fire aft. All blasts are at a thirty degree arc width.

[Riker]:"She knows what kind of ship she's dealing with, she's feeling around for him."

[Worf]:"Foudroyant changing course, sir, three hundred mark forty."

[Riker]:"Following up her press. Good. Mr. Worf, have you got subspace communication yet?"

[Worf]:"No, sir. The interference pattern is just too dense. Sir, they're firing again."

The Foudroyant emits a similar firing pattern.

[Riker]:"Mr. Worf, do you detect any effects as a result of their firing phasers?"

[Worf]:"No, sir. But they are firing photon torpedoes."

A single photon torpedo is launched from the forward launcher in a direction along the negative zenith. No effect is seen from that either.

[Worf]:"Sir, a ship uncloaking."

As Worf is saying it, the Hjrad's ship shimmers into existence between the Enterprise and the Foudroyant, much nearer to and facing the Foudroyant. It is at point blank range from the Foudroyant and just above it. Hjrad's ship fires its beam type weapons at the Foudroyant, whose shields flare under the sudden strain. Hjrad's ship re-cloaks again just as the Foudroyant begins firing. The first shots miss, so they change the direction of fire, anticipating opponent course changes. A couple of the shots seem to make contact.

[Worf]:"Hits on the Sycaran ship, sir."

Riker moves from his chair to stand behind Data, looking over his shoulder.

[Riker]:"Data, is there anything we can use to send a message to the Foudroyant that won't be disrupted?"

Data looks thoughtfully at the ops panel and considers the request for a moment. He then turns towards Riker.

[Data]:"Commander, information received by their navigational sensors would be unaffected by the subspace interference. We could modify our own sensors to transmit information directly to them. Unfortunately, such information could not be encoded in any standard communication formats. We would be unable to ensure that they would understand that the transmission is intended as a form of communication. While they are occupied with the battle, they may not notice the transmission. Also, for two way communication, they would be required to make similar modifications."

[Riker]:"Get on it."

[Data]:"Yes, Commander."

Riker looks back toward the viewscreen while Data moves from the ops panel to a science station. Another officer takes his place.

[Worf]:"Commander, look."

Worf brings Riker's attention to a photon torpedo (or analog) that is being fired at the Foudroyant from long. The angle of firing would place the source on the opposite side of the Foudroyant from the Enterprise and on the starboard side. The source is not visible, however. The Foudroyant fires directional phasers and detonates the torpedo before it contacts. They continue firing phasers in the same general area, but to no effect. Riker makes his way back to his seat.

[Riker]:"Mr. Worf, am I seeing things, or did they just fire while cloaked?"

[Worf]:"Anyone who would use such a tactic is clearly without honour, sir."

[Riker]:"I wonder why such long range, though."

Data continues working on his other task, but is able to participate in the conversation without distracting himself.

[Data]:"It could be a purely defensive consideration. Firing identifies their position. Perhaps they need the additional time to change position in order to take advantage of this ability."

[Riker]:"How're the sensors coming?"

[Data]:"I have just completed the modifications now, Commander."

Data returns to the ops position and types in a few test sequences and seems satisfied with the result.

[Data]:"What message shall I attempt to relate to the Foudroyant, Commander?"

[Riker]:"Let them know that Captain Picard and Counselor Troi are aboard the Sycaran vessel."

[Data]:"Yes, Commander."

Data begins typing away on his panel for a moment.

[Data]:"I have set it to repeat until further notice. I shall continue to monitor the Enterprise's navigational sensors."

Riker doesn't seem to be paying attention to Data, but has his attention focused on the viewscreen.

[Riker]:"What is that?"

On the right hand side of the screen is what appears to be the back half of the Sycaran ship. From this angle, there is a glimmering area that indicates the edge of the cloaking shields which is presumably not visible from the Foudroyant. It is at much closer range to the Foudroyant than the previous time.

[Data]:"I believe we now know how they can fire while cloaked."

[Riker]:"Worf, if we have any power to phasers, fire at that ship."

[Worf]:"Sir? The Captain ..."

[Riker]:"Now!"

Worf looks unconvinced, but fires nonetheless. The dorsal array fires a burst which hits the aft section of the Sycaran ship. The Sycaran vessel fires a volley of torpedoes at the Foudroyant, many of which hit the shields. Because of the advance warning given by the Enterprise's phasers, the Foudroyant is able to fire their phasers before the Sycaran ship can move out of the way and scores hits upon it. They attempt to come about to bring the torpedo launchers to bear, but the Sycarans re-cloak and change position before this is possible. The Foudroyant still fires a volley of torpedoes at the Sycarans, but do not hit it.

[Worf]:"Sir, weaponry control reports phasers are completely drained. Photon torpedoes are also unavailable."

[Riker]:"Understood, Lieutenant. Data, any response from the Foudroyant?"

[Data]:"Not yet, Commander. Commander, I was analyzing the Sycaran ship while it was semi-cloaked. The reason a ship needs to uncloak to fire is due to the power drain associated with the cloaking process. The Sycarans have found a way around this using a partial cloaking field, but according to my calculations, and based on my knowledge of cloaking technology using examples Klingon and Romulan cloaking shields, I have concluded that the power savings from this method would be insufficient to permit fully the firing of weapons."

[Worf]:"Then how did they do it?"

[Data]:"They lowered their shield energies substantially. I would estimate that at the moment of firing, their shield power was only ten percent of nominal."

[Riker]:"That's useful information, Data."

Riker seems about to add further comment when Worf interrupts.

[Worf]:"Vessel de-cloaking to aft, sir."

[Riker]:"Viewscreen, aft."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

The view of the Foudroyant is replaced by one of the Sycaran ship shimmering into view. The ship is currently moving in the direction of the negative zenith.

[Worf]:"They're firing, sir. And so is the Foudroyant."

A volley of photon torpedoes is launched from the Sycaran ship. They pass right above the Enterprise without hitting it. A blast of phaser fire passes over in the opposite direction. It also passes over the Sycaran ship.

[Worf]:"Torpedo hits on the Foudroyant, sir. The Sycaran ship is cloaking again."

[Data]:"Commander, I am receiving a transmission with the navigational sensors. 'Message received and understood, please advise.'"

[Riker]:"Inform them of what you discovered, Data."

[Data]:"Yes, Commander."

Data types in the information and begins waiting for reply.

[Data]:"'Message received.'"

[Riker]:"Return view to forward, Mr. Worf."

[Worf]:"Aye, sir."

The view again shows the Foudroyant which is in front of the Enterprise. An area of starfield to the port of the Foudroyant begins shimmering and the vessel appears at point blank range from the Foudroyant. The Sycaran vessel begins firing torpedoes. The Foudroyant soon responds with phasers.

[Data, confused]:"Commander, I would estimate that the Sycaran vessel is far to close to be firing photon torpedoes without damaging its own shields in the process."

Riker hits his combadge.

[Riker]:"Riker to transporter room."

[O'Brien]:"O'Brien here."

[Riker]:"Chief, if the Sycaran's shields drop even for an instant, lock onto the Captain and the Counselor's communicators right away, if you can, and beam them over. Understood?"

[O'Brien]:"Aye, sir."

The two vessels continue to smash each other.

[Data]:"Commander, the subspace disturbance has diminished. The Sycaran's shields are down."

[Riker]:"Chief?"

[O'Brien]:"Scanning, sir."

A sudden and furious explosion entirely envelops the Sycaran vessel. The force of the explosion seriously rocks both Federation ships. The Foudroyant's shields flare and then drop due to the strain and the Enterprise viewscreen briefly disengages to deal with the intensity of the light from the explosion.

[Riker]:"O'Brien, did you get them?"

[O'Brien]:"I'm sorry, sir. I wasn't able to get a lock on either of them."

Shock is evident on everyone's face as they look to Riker who is standing in the middle of the bridge. His face clearly shows the feelings of loss that he is experiencing.

Act V

Scene 1

External view showing the Enterprise saucer and the Foudroyant. Many scars are visible on the hulls of both craft, presumably due to the explosion.

[Riker]:"Enterprise log, supplemental, we fully scanned the battle area for any signs of Captain Picard and Counselor Troi, but have found no traces. I must therefore conclude that both were killed in the explosion of the Sycaran ship. I have just performed the saddest duty I have ever been required to perform, which was attending the memorial services for two of my best friends. I have attended many services, but somehow I never get used to them. It is hard to accept that they are gone. The feeling of loss is more profound than I can explain, but now I must get on with the business of running the ship. I have contacted starbase One Ninety Nine. The Enterprise is to proceed there with all due speed. I am told that currently orbiting Earth, there is a galaxy class stardrive section that was destined to be part of the Robert April. I will be traveling ahead to the starbase aboard the Foudroyant to rendez-vous with the Robert April which will soon be on its way."

Scene 2

Data and Riker enter the transporter room. O'Brien stands behind the control panel. Riker moves immediately to a transporter pad. Data moves to stand just in front of the console.

[Riker]:"So, you don't expect any problems getting to the starbase?"

[Data]:"No, Commander. I do not expect to encounter any difficulties. Foudroyant chief engineer Drauglin was able to assist us in fully replenishing out fuel supply and we recharged our batteries from their engines. We should have no difficulty reaching starbase One Ninety Nine."

[Riker]:"Speaking of Commander Drauglin, where is she? Has she returned to her own ship?"

[O'Brien]:"No, sir. She just called here before you arrived to say she's on her way."

At that point, Drauglin enters the transporter room. She steps onto the transporter pad next to Riker's.

[Drauglin]:"Okay, I'm ready."

Riker raises his eyebrow in that way he does.

[Riker]:"Well then, if you are ready, then there's no reason to hang around here. Energize."

O'Brien passes his hand over the control. Riker and Drauglin disappear.

Scene 3

Riker and Drauglin in the Foudroyant transporter room. Waiting there are DaGama, Michaels and Goran. DaGama moves forward to greet Riker. Drauglin gets off the transporter pad and leaves the room.

[DaGama]:"Bill, let me say again how sorry I am. I wish there was something else I could have done."

[Riker]:"It's alright, I understand. I should never have let him beam over there in the first place."

[DaGama]:"He was the Captain, not you. I don't think there was anything you could have done to stop him. Anyway, Commander William Riker, I'd like you to meet my first officer, Commander Gage Michaels."

Riker and Michaels shake hands.

[DaGama]:"And this is Counselor Aliana Goran."

Riker shakes hands with Goran.

[DaGama]:"Commander Michaels, would you mind showing Mr. Riker to his quarters?"

[Michaels]:"Not at all, Captain. This way, Commander."

Michaels gestures towards the door. Riker exits and Michaels follows.

[DaGama]:"Counselor, I'd like you to spend some time with him. I'd just like to make sure he's alright."

[Goran]:"That is my job, after all."

DaGama and Goran leave the transporter room.

Scene 4

External view of starbase One Ninety Nine, a space dock orbiting a planet. Suddenly a Kulibhrer class ship uncloaks beside it. Some external warning lights on the starbase begin flashing.

Scene 5

Picard and Troi are seated in the dining hall. Kayne enters. Picard and Troi immediately stand.

[Picard]:"I demand to know what is going on."

[Kayne]:"You can demand anything you want, Captain, but I am not interested in your demands. However, I will tell you this, you are both very lucky."

[Picard]:"What do you mean by that?"

[Kayne]:"You are lucky because the Lord General is an honourable man. He promised no harm would come to either of you, and none has. He also promised your return and that too will be fulfilled. Know too, that he does this in spite of the traitorous actions of your Federation in attacking one of our ships. If you will follow me."

Kayne indicates that they should follow him into the corridor and they do.

[Picard]:"They attacked one of your ships?"

[Kayne]:"And destroyed it. But do not worry, I'm sure the Lord General will soon have revenge for that. Of course that is really none of your concern."

The three enter the transporter room of the Sycaran ship.

[Kayne]:"If you wouldn't mind stepping up on the platform, Captain, Counselor."

Picard and Troi step onto the platform.

[Kayne]:"Until our next encounter."

Kayne presses a few buttons on the console. Picard and Troi disappear.

Scene 6

Troi and Picard appear on a transporter platform on the starbase. A transporter technician, who was looking out of a window, whirls around in surprise at the sound of the transporter beam that brought them.

[Technician]:"Who are you?"

[Picard]:"Captain Picard, of the Enterprise. Where are we?"

[Technician]:"Transporter room seven-A."

[Picard]:"Yes, but room seven-A of where?"

[Technician]:"Starbase One Ninety Nine, of course. Did you arrive on this ship?"

The technician indicates something outside the window. Picard and Troi move to look outside. They arrive in time to see Hjrad's ship re-cloak. They turn back towards the room.

[Technician]:"That was incredible."

[Picard]:"Wasn't it though. Yes, I guess we did arrive on that ship. Well, Counselor, I think we'd better speak with whoever is in charge around here."

[Technician]:"That would be Admiral Dvorak."

[Picard]:"Thank you."

Picard and Troi leave the transporter room and enter the corridor. Picard walks over to a computer panel and puts his hand on it. It lights up.

[Picard]:"Computer, display the location of Admiral Dvorak's office and indicate directions to there from this location."

A map appears on the screen with a flashing blip that indicates their destination. Picard and Troi begin walking down the corridor.

[Picard]:"Well, it was certainly an experience."

[Troi]:"To what are you referring, Captain."

[Picard]:"Being able to see a Greek myth being played out in reverse."

[Troi]:"You know, I've been thinking about that, Captain. I think you're wrong. Hjrad isn't Paris, he's Achilles."
